Why Do I Need a Preparticipation Physical Evaluation (PPE) or Sports Physical?
- As an Athlete you want to keep playing and pursuing your passion. In order to do that — one must take care of your body from a wholeness perspective. So, in addition to physical fitness, nutrition, mental wellbeing and safety within sports there is Prevention.
- An annual wellness exam is NOT the same thing as a preparticipation physical exam (PPE or aka Sports Physical). This is a different type of exam and encompasses many exam techniques specifically administered by your Physician for evaluation.
- The American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Osteopathic Academy for Sports Medicine, American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology all collaborate to produce guidelines for a PPE.
- Most organized Sports Teams require a PPE to fulfill legal and insurance requirements clearing you to participate.
What Can I Expect?
The goal of a PPE is to:
- All Physical Exams you will be provided with an exam gown or shorts. Undergarments should be left on. If you arrive in your own shorts and loose-fitting shirt, this may suffice and is up to Dr. Sun’s discretion.
- Maximize your safe participation and longevity in your preferred Sport.
- Identify any medical problems that could present a life-threatening risk during moments of exertion (cardiac etc.).
- Identify medical conditions that would require a treatment plan before or after participating in your sport (diabetes, insulin dependence, hypertension).
- Identify any previous musculoskeletal injuries, evaluate the extent of rehabilitiation or necessity thereof.
- Identify and treat any conditions that might interfere with optimal performance or present a potentially dangerous obstacle (asthma, bronchospasm induced during exercise).
- Remove any unnecessary restrictions on participation, if needed.
When Should I get a PPE?
Timing is truly everything in life. Lack of planning can often lead to unwanted consequences.
- Make an appointment 4-6 weeks before your season starts.
- Advance planning can allow time to treat any medical issues and/or rehabilitiate some musculoskeletal injuries in time for you to participate and receive clearance.
- Annually is usually required and recommended by Sports and Health Professionals.
Will I have to have a Lab Test?
- Routine lab testing is not a requirement in the PPE Guidelines.
- It is always up to the discretion of the Physician to determine if any further testing is recommended or required for clearance based upon the PPE exam findings.
When will I get the Paperwork I need?
- Immediately following the visit, Doctor Sun will fill out the forms for you to leave with – in hand.
- No returning later for pick-up necessary at this office.
What Is Your Office Like?
- You can expect a humble, small, modest, clean, no-frills office. There is no administrative staff, nor medical assistants as Dr. Sun performs all her own work. Pictures are on the ‘How It Works‘ page.
- As you can imagine, the cost to provide a brick-and-mortar location is expensive, then couple that with providing medical services, the equipment and regulations required – it sometimes can be out of reach.
- If you have an in-clinic appointment, there will never be a waiting room full of people. Appointments are separated by a substantial amount of time. When you arrive, the time and clinic is blocked only for you.
- Dr. Sun was able to create two physically separate suites within what was once fully occupied by a computer shop. Now the suite in the back is the computer repair shop (Suite D2) , and her medical office occupies (Suite D1). We went through ~8 months of work to make this happen with the City of LA and San Pedro.
Why Make an Appointment Here?
- Dr. Sun’s practice philosophy and goal is to provide the best care for you while making the experience pleasant and not a chore.
- Why does going to the Doctor have to be so dreaded? If you think about it – it’s typically the arduous, impersonal, maze-like process that virtually everyone tries to avoid.
- This is a low volume, Doctor run office.
- Simple and straightforward.
- Make a choice to have a good experience, because every experience you have in life – matters.
- Also, I have been an avid athlete my entire ife. Talk to someone who gets it.
